2010 Student Scholarship winner: NICHOLAS LEGERE

The Sanford/Springvale Art Association is proud to announce that our 2010 student scholarship winner is Nicholas S. Legere. Nicholas was awarded the 2010 SSAA scholarship in the amount of $250 at the Sanford High School graduation ceremony on June 4th and will be attending the Maine College of Art in Portland this fall. He was required to submit a portfolio to Maine College of Art for which he received a merit scholarship.
Nicholas visited the Sanford Art Gallery on June 26th and brought along a hand built ceramic pot and a delightful medieval chess set as well as a portfolio of many of his works. SSAA members Mia Auger, Georgia Flanagan and Mary Gannon were on hand to interview Nicholas. He loves graphic design, which he began to teach to himself in the 7th grade through a downloaded graphics tutorial. Other interests for Nicholas include woodworking and creative writing.
In a thank you letter to the Sanford/Springvale Art Association, Nicholas wrote, “First and foremost, I would like to say that I am honored to be the recipient of the Sanford/Springvale Art Scholarship. I am ecstatic as well as deeply grateful for the good fortune that you have bestowed on me. The scholarship will be a benefactor in reducing the cost of my college education. I will proudly work up to my highest potential in order to demonstrate that you have invested in the right person. Thank you for your time, your consideration and generosity.”
Needless to say, we were very impressed and thrilled to meet Nicholas and wish him well on both his college career and his path through life.

| The Pen and Pencil Club |

Bring your Pens and Pencils (no pastels or paints), to The Community Room at Goodall Library, Thursdays (except Christmas & New Year's) from 10 to 11:30am. There will be a still life set up, good supportive company and plenty of reference books available to look at. Open to everyone interested in drawing and or writing.

| Painting Nights |
|
The third Thursday of the month at the Springvale Library from 5pm to 8:00 pm come and paint with other interested people in having a creative "zone" to paint either something of your choice or a model if there is one.

| GALLERY INFORMATION |
All association forms are located in the off-white box on the floor, behind the counter. The box contains: membership forms, show agreements (both for the Gallery and the Hospital), Minutes from meetings (red folder), Gallery information (blue folder), a “mail folder” for each of the officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership, Webmaster, please use these for any letters, notes, and any information that needs to reach the above.

| 2010 Meeting Calendar |
| January 13th – 9:00am at the Gallery |
| This will be a good meeting for those who haven’t attended regularly to meet the artists in our group. So bring in your artwork and, if possible, a folding chair. We will be discussing the upcoming shows and other events for the year. |

| March 3rd – 9:00am at the Gallery |
| Please bring in your artwork and 2 or 3 paintings for a critique that will immediately follow the business portion of our meeting. So don’t be shy, in the past the critiques have been an informative and fun event. The paintings can be completed or ones that you are still working on. Critique artist to be announced at a later date.

| We plan to get a speaker who will talk about advertising after the business meeting.

| We hope to have a collage demonstration after our business meeting.

| Bring in 2 or 3 paintings for a critique after our business meeting. This will help to accommodate people who can’t attend our morning meetings. If you attended our critique in March you can bring in more paintings. Remember that the paintings can be ones that you are still working on or ones that you have completed. | After our business meeting,” Mia Auger will give a description of the history and process of pit firing. Included in her presentation will be work in progress and completed work, including pictures. |

| After our business meeting a talk called “Reinventing Oneself, A Personal Journey by Hilary Zayed of life dramatically changing due to a brain injury and discovering art and writing when life as it was could no longer be. The power point presentation includes visual art, journaling and whimsical quips about life, healing and attitudes.”
