Annaclette is a Maine artist and craftsperson who expresses her love of nature through her work. This work includes watercolor on scratchboard, photography and sculptural work in porcelain. Many people ask about the name, Annaclette. This is actually her middle name, Patricia Annaclette Smith. Her middle name was taken from her maternal grandmother and has always been used as the signature on her artwork.
A native of Maine, Annaclette was born in Brunswick, mostly grew up in the Portland area and now resides in Alfred. She majored in Illustration at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, attended classes in art and working in clay at the University of Maine and the Portland School of Art. She is a member of the Maine Women in the Arts, The Art Guild of the Kennebunks, the Sanford/Springvale Art Association, the Society of Southern Maine Craftsmen and the Maine Made Program.
While doing research and photographing plants for an illustration project for the Wells Reserve (Laudholm Trust) she became interested in going out to find, photograph and identify native wild flowers. These have become her favorite subjects. She began working first in black & white scratchboard and later on began using watercolors to complete the images with delicate colors. This scratchboard work produces very finely detailed images..
Now retired, she has more time to go out into our local woods looking for more subjects, inspiration and wonderful exercise and relaxation. She learned a lot by becoming a Plant Conservation Volunteer doing Special Plant Surveys. Her interest in preserving our native wild flowers and their sometimes vanishing habitats has led her to volunteer to help our local land trusts. She volunteered first with the Laudholm Trust and then with the Great Works Regional Land Trust. She currently volunteers with the Three Rivers Land Trust. Their focus areas, interior York County, includes Alfred, Acton, Shapleigh, Sanford/Springvale, & Lebanon.
She still continues to work in Porcelain, producing decorative wall plaques in Low Relief designs, hand built miniature sculptures, tiny thrown and carved ring bowls, and Christmas ornaments. These and her artwork are available through the co-op store, Stone Soup Artisans located at 228 Main St. in Saco.
She also keeps work on display in a shop area at her home in Alfred, and a few items are available at the Sanford Art gallery on Main St in Sanford (next to town hall). Shop hours at home are limited and anyone interested should call before coming by. She enjoys meeting other artists and working with them through the Art Shows sponsored by both The Maine Women in the Arts and The Art Guild of the Kennebunks and at the Saco store and Sanford Gallery.
